Ocular Fleur series

2014 · Olsen Gallery

James McGrath’s _Ocular/Fleur_ series reimagines classical still-life by merging 17th-century Dutch floral motifs with Australian botanicals, presented through spherical canvases and reflective surfaces. Employing Baroque spatial techniques alongside contemporary digital methods, McGrath creates dynamic illusions where petals swirl within glass orbs, blurring distinctions between interior and exterior, viewer and artwork. The paintings and videos embody a seductive paradox: moving still lifes steeped in decadence and melancholy, reflecting the ephemeral nature of beauty and the unpredictability of ideas. This series critiques traditional Western modes of seeing, exposing their limitations and the cultural unease around colonial botanical transplants. Spheres—metaphorically smashed into kaleidoscopic shards—further intensify the sense of fragmented perception, symbolizing how cultural perspectives distort and reconstruct our view of nature. Ocular/Fleur thus confronts the viewer with the seductive beauty of art history while simultaneously questioning its legacy and relevance to contemporary ecological realities
