ARTWORK BY JAMES MCGRATH

" My work constantly engages with layers of historical imagery, digital media and traditional art making. From 16th Century libraries and Theatres of Anatomy to investigating climate datasets, all folded into a Baroque theatricality. "

Banksia Lady

A Greek statue (British Museum) of a dancing Daphne is placed in a swirl of Australian native Banksia flowers. While the camera traces a helix path around the group, the two elements engage in a “dance”. Western ideals of beauty are submerged into the gnarled Antipodean native flora, a contrast of time and place.“The Banksia tumble in and out of the
frame, creating a sense of breathing
from the still statue”

“floreo universitas”

A video created from a dataset of all the near stars in our galaxy. Flowers were scanned using LIDAR technology to create 3D cloud points. An interest of mine is the possibility of a micro object viewed as a macro environment. A galaxy which can be found within every small thing.
