Natura Venor (hunting) series
2021 · Olsen Gallery
Drawing on the visual language of 17th-century Dutch still life, the work employs exquisite detail, rich textures, and symbolic elements to convey themes of transience and decay—memento mori for the Anthropocene. However, McGrath subverts the serene compositions typical of the genre by introducing violent disruption: hunting dogs ravaging the natural environment rather than traditional game. This inversion challenges the glorification of human dominance over nature, a recurring theme in hunting art since the Baroque period.
