The floating still life, framed and hung at last in a domestic baroque room — a picture inside a picture. Mirrors on the surrounding walls return the scene from different vantage points, so no single view of the painting is allowed to settle. Only the bird seems unconvinced by the arrangement: the disconnected observer, the one element in the image still able to leave.
